A former assistant track coach at Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., was sentenced to more than 17 years in prison Friday for sexually abusing seven students.
Charles Young, 35, pleaded guilty in February to seven felony counts of sexual abuse, including first-degree child sexual abuse, attempted first-degree sexual abuse of a minor, and multiple counts of attempted second-degree sexual abuse of a minor.
Young worked as Dunbar High School's business manager from 2012 to 2014. He volunteered as an assistant boys' track coach and held other responsibilities that regularly put him in contact with students, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a release.
Prosecutors said between January 2013 and May 2014 Young abused seven male students between the ages of 14 and 17. All of the abuse happened on
Dunbar's campus.
On several occasions, Young used his position as a track coach to sexually abuse the boys and inappropriately touch them, according to prosecutors.
One student came forward about the abuse in November 2014, which triggered an investigation.
After Young completes his 17 ½-year sentence he will be placed on supervised release and must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
