Runner Dies After Finishing Brooklyn Half Marathon: Officials

A runner died after collapsing at the finish line in the Brooklyn Half Marathon Saturday, according to race organizers.

A 31-year-old runner crossed the finish line of the 13.1-mile race Saturday in Coney Island and collapsed shortly thereafter, New York Road Runners told Runner’s World magazine. On-site medical staff treated the man, who was later taken to Coney Island Hospital.

The man, whose identity wasn't released, died sometime later, according to the NYRR.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of a participant following the 2014 NYRR Brooklyn Half,” the organization said in a Facebook post. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and those close to him.”

More than 25,000 runners participated in the annual race Saturday morning.
