Homicide Charge for Driver in Crash That Killed Girlfriend

Monmouth County authorities have accused a Camden man of driving recklessly and under the influence of alcohol in a crash that claimed the life of his girlfriend in Belmar on Easter.

Edwin Martinez is held on $300,500 bail, charged with vehicular homicide, causing a death while driving with a suspended license and criminal mischief.

Authorities say the 22-year-old drove off at a high rate of speed after an altercation outside a bar.

Authorities say Martinez ran a red light on Route 35, collided with a vehicle and his 26-year-old passenger Tiffany Soto was ejected from his car. The Howell resident was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The impact caused Martinez's vehicle to hit a curb, overturn and strike a pole. It then went airborne into a marina parking lot, where it hit a pickup truck.

The occupants of the other vehicle were not injured.
