A car hit a mother and her child walking on a sidewalk on Roosevelt Boulevard Monday afternoon, police say. The 44-year-old mother died.
Police confirm that the unidentified mother of three died from her injuries and her 4-year-old son was hospitalized at St. Christopher’s Hospital in stable condition.
The accident occurred at about 2:40 Monday, closing several lanes in the Pennypack Park area of Roosevelt Boulevard.
Police confirmed what a witness told NBC Philadelphia: A moving truck possibly cut off a Toyota Camry, which forced the driver of the Camry to jump the curb of a very narrow sidewalk along the southbound side of Roosevelt Boulevard near Strahle Street striking the mother and son.
The driver of the car stopped and was noticeably overcome by emotion following the wreck.
Police weren't actively looking for the truck that allegedly pulled in front of the driver of the Camry because they believed the driver of the car possibly just panicked and wasn't forced to the curb, according to authorities.
The victim of the accident was remembered by her priest as a wonderful family woman.
“Great mom, three sons -- kind of person who would always smile and her smile would make you smile,” Rev. Stephen Siniari of St. Stephen Orthodox Cathedral said.
“It’s a big loss not only to the family, but the entire orthodox community in Philadelphia and we’re gonna miss her.”

The southbound lanes of the boulevard were reopened shortly after 6 p.m. Monday.
