A brown substance could be seen spewing into the air from an underground gas main leak in South Jersey Tuesday.
A third-party contractor struck the 6-inch main at Spring Garden and South Egg Harbor roads in Winslow Township, South Jersey Gas spokeswoman Marissa Travaline said.
The ensuing geyser was reported around 11:45 a.m. and continued for more than an hour. No injuries were reported.
The brown substance is water and mud being pushed up from the recent rainy weather, Travaline said.
A dump truck could be seen nearby as the brown substance spewed onto the road, which was coned off. South Jersey gas workers and firefighters responded to the scene.
Residents living nearby were evacuated and the county Office of Emergency Management responded with a bus for residents to ride it out, Camden County spokesman Dan Keashen said. Residents were later allowed back into their homes late Tuesday afternoon.

New Jersey Transit suspended service on its recently reopened Atlantic City Rail Line due to the leak, the agency tweeted. Rail tickets were cross honored on buses.
SJ Gas workers continue to repair the lines and will monitor for any residual gas readings in or around homes. They advise residents to call 911 if they smell gas in their homes.
Fleming Pike remains closed from Hay Road to Egg Harbor Road. Eastbound traffic on Fleming Pike from Egg Harbor Road to the White Horse Pike is also closed while one lane of travel is open on Egg Harbor Road from Spring Garden Road to Spring Road.
