A man who police say was fatally stabbed while trying to protect a woman and her baby from a knife-wielding attacker in downtown Wilmington will be honored.
The News Journal reports Mayor Dennis P. Williams announced Monday that the city will install a plaque in honor of Thomas "Cannibal'' Cottingham at Rodney Square.
That's where authorities say 27-year-old Cottingham was stabbed repeatedly in the neck and torso on Sept. 14. Police say he intervened to protect a 21-year-old woman and her 6-month-old baby during an attack. Cottingham later died at a hospital.
Police say 25-year-old Calvin Hooker III has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Cottingham's death. He is being held without bail at Young Correctional Institution.
It wasn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.
