2 More Dead: Wilmington Surpasses Last Year's Homicide by Gunfire Total

Wilmington police say two men are dead after overnight shootings in the city.

Officers were called to Wilmington Hospital about 12:45 a.m. Sunday for one victim who had been brought there by a private car. 23-year-old Brian Irby underwent emergency surgery but died of his wounds. Police say they did not know where the shooting took place.

Police say a second victim was shot three times near 27th and Tatnall streets about 2 a.m. Thirty-two-year-old Howard Watkins was taken to a hospital but later died.

Investigators are asking any witnesses to come forward with information.

The killings brought Wilmington's count of homicides by gunfire to 19 this year. That's one more than in all of 2013. One other homicide in 2014 was caused by a stabbing.
