Wilmington Gets Smart (Meters)

Smart meters are coming to Wilmington's central business district.

The city began installing the new meters Monday afternoon and aims to install all 200 by the end of the week.

The single-space meters allow drivers to pay with coins, credit cards and smart cards and they will also have a pay-by-phone feature. The meters will reset to zero when a car leaves a parking spot.

The city council approved a $179,340 contract last month with Duncan Parking Technologies to purchase the meters. The contract includes an option to purchase additional meters at fixed prices for the next five years. The city has left open the possibility of installing smart meters citywide if the pilot program goes well.
