Whoopie Wars: Maine Votes Pie Official Treat

In a game of one-upmanship in the whoopie pie debate, Maine is trying to out outdo Pennsylvania when it comes to the creamy, chocolatey confection.

A Maine radio station is teaming up with whoopie pie-maker Wicked Whoopies to create a whoopie that'll weigh more than 500 pounds.

Construction of the massive chocolate cakes stuffed with creamy frosting was announced as the Maine House gave preliminary approval Wednesday to making the whoopie the official state treat. The blueberry pie would become Maine's official dessert.

Contrary to Maine's assertion, Pennsylvania contends the whoopee pie was invented by the Amish.

But WMGX Program Director Randi Kirshbaum says there'll be no doubt over whose is bigger. The Maine whoopie to be displayed Saturday will carry double the heft of Pennsylvania's 250-pound record-holder.
