Great Grandfather, 95, Shot Through Window in West Philly Home

A gunman fires at least 5 shots into West Philly home, striking a 95-year-old great grandfather & a 33-year-old man

Someone fired several shots into a West Philadelphia home overnight, leaving one man critically injured and a 95-year-old great grandfather bleeding heavily.

The shooting occurred around 3:15 a.m. Thursday along Rodman Street near 53rd Street, Philadelphia police said.

Someone outside fired at least five shots through the home's front living room window, hitting the two men, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

A 33-year-old man who was shot in the chest was hospitalized in critical condition. The 95-year-old man was shot in the arm as he was lying on a couch and was hospitalized in stable condition after losing a lot of blood.

The elderly man has lived in the neighborhood his entire life. Three other people in the residence, including a 2-year-old girl who was upstairs asleep, were not injured.

A group of people, including a 19-year-old on electronically-monitored house arrest, were sitting on the porch earlier in the night, police said. Officers dispersed the crowd and took another teen into custody on an unrelated offense.

Later in the night, someone opened fire on the home, Philadelphia Police Lt. John Walker said. It's possible the 19-year-old who lives at the home and some other people who may have been back on the porch were the targets of the shooter, Walker said.

There was nothing suspicious inside the home in plain view, Small said. But the 19-year-old fled after the shooting.

Police don't believe an earlier triple shooting at 60th and Spruce streets was related, Small said.
