Waterproof Phone Case Credited for Saving Stranded New Jersey Kayakers

A waterproof cellphone case is being credited with helping to save two stranded kayakers in southern New Jersey.

Nineteen-year-old Matthew Reif and 28-year-old Frederick William were kayaking Monday in the Maurice River, which empties into the Delaware Bay, when their kayaks capsized.

While treading water with no life vests, they were able to call for help because they were carrying a phone in a waterproof case.

NJ.com reports State Police Marine Services rescued the two men about three-quarters of a mile offshore. They were alert and conscious when they were taken to a local hospital. State police said neither suffered life-threatening injuries.
