NJ Imposes Water-Use Restrictions

Gov. Christie urges everyone in the Garden State to use less water

New Jersey officials imposed water-use restrictions statewide Wednesday to aid conservation amid possible shortages after superstorm Sandy.

“Power companies are working hard to restore electricity to water utilities, but right now it’s impossible to say how long these facilities will have to be operated on backup generators,” Commissioner Martin said in a release. “Everyone must pitch in immediately and take steps to reduce water consumption.  Without conservation now, homes and businesses could find themselves without water in the near future if backup generation fails. We need full and immediate cooperation.”

Gov. Chris Christie said watering lawns and gardens will be banned for now, as will outdoor car-washing and washing pavement.

He says that 12 water treatment systems across the state have issued boil-water advisories.

Christie says people should also save water by taking shorter showers and other measures.
