School Gets iPads for Every Student

Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School is welcoming students back to school this year with an iPad.

The Wallingford-based school in Delaware County has secured iPads for every first to eighth grade student.

"It's actually kind of cool that we get an iPad," said eighth grader Joshua Jose, 13. "We are able to bring it home and it's nice. It's portable and helps us do our homework and get things done."

Two hundred iPads will be distributed to students during the first week of school. Students in every grade except for Kindergarten will be permitted to take them home. Kindergarten students will be able to use them at school.

Students will be able to use their iPad for homework and print their assignments at school. This helps students who don't have a computer at home, according to Jose. The school will also issue guidelines for how students' personal use on the iPads.

"This is an exciting initiative," said principal Therese Waters. "We are preparing our students for 21st century skills, technology, collaborative learning and taking common core standards to another level."

The teaching staff has embraced the use of iPads in the classroom and are looking for ways to include them in the lesson plans, according to Waters.

The 200 iPads were acquired through the Office of Catholic Education, as part of the school merger and via government funding. The cases and apps are underwritten by the school. At the end of the school year, students will return the iPads for maintenance. They will be redistributed the following school year.

"Our school technology-wise is advanced," said Jose, who is excited about moving up from a netbook last year to an iPad this year.

Mother of Providence Regional School is a relatively new school in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. It opened just last year.
