Officers Make Arrest in Robbery That Led to Deadly South Jersey Police Shooting

Authorities have arrested a second man in an armed robbery that led to police shooting and killing the other suspect who exchanged gunfire with them in New Jersey.

Thirty-one-year-old John Bain was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with robbery and unlawful possession of a weapon. The Vineland man is accused of trying to rob a man with 31-year-old Richard Bard Jr. early Sunday.

Police say Bain repeatedly struck the robbery victim in the head with a handgun. Cumberland County prosecutors say police pursued both suspects and Bard exchanged gunfire with police. One officer shot Bard, who was died at a hospital.

The officer hasn't immediately been identified. The officer has been placed on administrative duty.

It's unclear whether Bain has an attorney who could comment on the charges.
