Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Students from Devon Preparatory School are getting a first-hand account of the reality of war.
As part of a class project in honor of Veterans Day, the students left the history books behind and went outside the classroom to interview local veterans.
Thirteen veterans at the Devon Senior Living Community participated in the school project with the students, sharing their personal stories from war.
“I thought it was an opportunity to tell some of it the way it was,” said John Houston, World War II pilot.
James A. Lane, Korean War Veteran, was glad to share his story with words, rather than pictures.
“I tore up all my pictures. I burned them. I threw them all out. I figured telling them was enough,” said Lane.
Devon Prep teacher Joe Lewis called this project an eye-opening experience for his students.

“What is Veterans’ Day? A lot of these kids think of Afghanistan, maybe Iraq and so forth. It’s kind of distant to them. This way it’s very real, very close,” said Lewis.
The students each focused on one veteran’s story, and will write an autobiography that they will share with that veteran.
“I think it meant a lot to them because not only did we go and interview them. We wrote an autobiography about them,” said Brendan Leardi, Devon Prep student.
