Man Shot and Killed While Sitting on Porch in Upper Darby

Police are searching for the gunman who shot and killed a man in Upper Darby Wednesday afternoon.

Police say the victim, who was in his 20s, was sitting on a porch with a group of people on the 7000 block of Atlantic Avenue around 4:15 p.m. Suddenly another group approached them. At least one person in the approaching group took out a gun and opened fire, according to investigators.

The man in his 20s was struck at least once in the shooting. Police say he ran a few feet and then collapsed to the ground. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not yet identified the victim or released a description of the suspect. They say there were several witnesses in the area at the time of the shooting however and are urging people to come forward.

“Number one it’s a tragedy and my respects go out to the family,” said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. “Number two there were a lot of people who saw what happened. Now they’ve got to come forward and they’ve got to step up…People have to stand up and people have to have the guts to tell us what happened. If they don’t tell us what happened then we’ve got an unsolved homicide.”

If you have any information on the shooting, please call Upper Darby Police.
