Michael Nixon, 17 of Upper Darby, turned himself in at police headquarters in Upper Darby on Tuesday, May 20 and was charged with murder as an adult in connection to the shooting death of 16-year-old Khalif Webster, Superintendent of Police Timothy Bernhardt announced Wednesday.

The shooting happened during an argument between two young people just before 3 p.m. on May 18, 2025, in the area of Long Lane and Pine Street, police originally said on Sunday.

When officers got to the scene, they found Webster lying on the ground, Bernhardt said.

Webster was shot in the back, according to police, and was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.

Within hours of the shooting, detectives were able to identify Nixon as the suspect, according to Bernhardt. Two search warrants were conducted on Monday and led to officials talking to two family members of Nixon who told them where he was.

Then, on Monday, Nixon walked into police headquarters by himself, Bernhardt explained. Other people may also get charged in connection to this shooting for allegedly helping Nixon stay hidden.

"He had a bright future," Upper Darby Mayor Ed Brown said of Webster. "Every time we lose someone like that, our community is weakened."

Nixon is currently being held in a Delaware County jail and was denied bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 6, 2025.

Webster is the second student in the Upper Darby School District to be taken by gun violence in 2025.
