Underground Fire Knocks Out Power

An underground fire knocked out power to some residents and firefighters in West Philadelphia overnight.

The transformer sparked around 3 a.m. Wednesday at 56th and Chestnut Streets.

No injuries were reported.

PECO crews and firefighters could be seen responding to the fire as smoke rose from a grate at the scene near some homes and businesses.

The transformer issue caused power to go out to some nearby row homes and even the local firehouse, Engine 57. Firefighters said that despite the lights being out they remained operational in case of emergency.

No word yet on when the lights will go back on.
