A Pennsylvania state trooper was convicted of a career-threatening careless driving citation for a crash that killed another driver.
The Erie Times-News reports Trooper Frederick Schimp has 30 days to appeal Wednesday's verdict by a district judge.
The 49-year-old trooper could lose his job because the citation carries a six-month license suspension due to the fatality.
The district attorney declined to file more serious criminal charges saying Schimp was "negligent" but not criminally so in the July 5 crash that killed 57-year-old Donna Platz, of Edinboro.
Investigators say Schimp was patrolling in a 2013 Ford Explorer about 3:30 a.m. when he ran a stop sign.
Schimp acknowledged running the stop sign and pleaded guilty to a citation for that offense.
Schimp remains on the job until his citation and an internal investigation are finished.
