Heavy Snow Leads to Travel Restrictions in Our Area

SEPTA is operating on a Saturday Regional Rail schedule on Monday due to the wintry weather

Heavy snow in parts of the Philadelphia region made for sloppy road conditions and impacted drivers and commuters, with agencies issuing several travel advisories.

The snow wrapped up before daybreak Monday morning, but left up to 8 inches in the Lehigh Valley and slippery conditions on roads around the suburbs.

A Traffic Management Program was in effect for traffic arriving at Philadelphia International Airport due to the weather. This caused some arriving flights to be delayed on average of 54 minutes.

To see if you've been affected, select your departure airport and check "Delays by Destination."

SEPTA will operate on an enhanced Saturday schedule Monday. SEPTA asked commuters to check printed schedules as TrainView went down due to "technical difficulties."

Service disruptions are possible, particularly on Regional Rail and on bus routes that operate on roadways that typically become difficult to traverse during extreme winter weather. Customers are urged to consider options on the Market-Frankford and Broad Street Lines.

Check the SEPTA website for more information.

PATCO is operating on a normal weekday schedule.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation issued commercial vehicle restrictions that went into effect Sunday at 3 p.m. and included buses. Those restrictions with the exception of Route 33 from I-78 to I-80, had expired by the Monday morning commute.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) also issued a Winter Weather Alert after Gov. Phil Murphy declared a State of Emergency.

NJDOT issued a commercial vehicle travel restriction for all tractor-trailers, empty straight CDL-weighted trucks, passenger vehicles pulling trailers, recreational vehicles and motorcycles on interstates including I-295, I-76, I-676, I-195, I-78 and other interstates.

Amtrak originally planned to operate a modified Keystone Service (New York - Philadelphia - Harrisburg) on Monday due to the snow. The agency, however, suspended all trains between Philly and Harrisburg around 5:45 a.m. due to wire issues west of the Elizabethtown station. Crews were working to fix the problem.

NJ Transit anticipated regular weekend service Monday. They are also offering systemwide cross-honoring service Monday for the entire day, allowing customers to use their ticket or pass on an alternate travel mode, including rail, light rail, bus and private bus carriers.
