Toothpick Shard Found in Halloween Candy in South Jersey

Residents in Manchester Township, New Jersey should inspect candy received while trick-or-treating after a parent made a dangerous discovery, authorities said in a release.

A parent bit into a Tootsie Roll containing a toothpick shard after trick-or-treating with her child in the Pine Lake Park section of the township, police said, adding that another Tootsie Roll was found with a punctured wrapper but no toothpick inside.

Patrolman Patrick Mabie investigated and was advised by the parent that her family mainly trick-or-treated on Madison Avenue, Twelfth Avenue, and Birmingham Avenue, according to police.

"Residents are always advised to inspect Halloween candy for tampering," the release said.

Any residents who think they received suspicious candy are urged to call the Manchester Township Police Department at (732) 657-6111.
