Teenager Rescued After Falling Into 100 Foot Well

A 14-year-old girl is recovering after falling nearly 100 feet into a well at a northeastern Pennsylvania reservoir.

Officials say the teen was with friends near the Hollister Reservoir in Lackawanna County at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday when she fell into the shaft along a dam's catwalk. She dropped nearly 100 feet and landed in cold water below.

The well is part of a concrete structure known as a dry dam, which functions as a service shaft for the reservoir.

The girl suffered a broken leg and hypothermia but is expected to recover.

Crews from around the region responded. An officer from the Lehigh Township police department spent three hours in the water with the girl, comforting her until she was extracted. He was also treated for hypothermia.

Officials say the dam is a popular place for teens to swim.
