Swimming Pools All Across the City to Open

Mayor Nutter announces the official opening of Philadelphia's 70 swimming pools for the summer

Kids all over the city will be able to get out of the heat this summer.

Mayor Nutter gave an official announcement for the opening of Philadelphia’s swimming pools at the Awbury Recreation Center today.

“Nothing signals the start of summer more than, I guess at least two things, the end of school and the opening of swimming pools,” said Nutter. “We are tremendously excited about the kickoff of another wonderful summer in Philadelphia, and pool season."

The mayor also announced the Summer Food Service Program. This program, which begins on June 18, provides breakfast, lunch and snacks throughout the summer to kids that qualify for a free school lunch.

Nutter spoke of a new opportunity for student to take part in. “Fun, Safe Philly Summer” campaign is sponsoring the Summer Reading Challenge and Summer Service Challenge. If students complete either challenges, they will have a chance to win tickets to the zoo, a concert, or a local sporting event.

The "Fun, Safe Philly Summer" campaign is the city’s initiative to give young people more activities and programs to get involved in during the summer.
