Deadly Shooting of Marine on Front Porch Stuns Montco Neighborhood

A Montgomery County neighborhood was reeling on Christmas Eve after police say a gunman shot a well-known Marine to death on the man's front porch on Wednesday.

Police said the 73-year-old victim was sitting on the front porch of his home on the 1700 block of Prospect Avenue in Abington about 7 p.m. when a gunman pulled up in a silver Dodge minivan and shot him.

The Marine veteran, whom neighbors said was active in the local VFW, died. Police are withholding his name pending family notification.

Abington Police caught up with the driver three blocks away at Prospect and Washington avenues. Police said as officers surrounded the van, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot himself.

He was taken to nearby Abington Memorial Hospital. He was last listed in critical condition. Police have not yet released his identity.

"We reviewed tape from the in car cameras and the Abington Police Department was exhibiting incredible restraint," Montgomery County First Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele said after the shootings.

Neighbors of the victim said they were shocked at his violent death.

"Nice guy, nice guy. That's all I can say. I know nothing bad about him," Gladys Wilson said of the man.

The motive for the deadly shooting was not immediately known.

The investigation is ongoing.
