Officials in Delco Declare State of Emergency in Aftermath of Storm

Delaware County officials have declared a state of emergency after Tuesday's severe storms crippled several municipalities throughout the area.

Nearly all of Middletown Township remained without power about 7 a.m., and massive swaths of roadway in the municipality were impassable, covered with downed trees and electrical wires.

Nearby, the borough of Brookhaven declared a state of emergency, as the storm left major damage along Edgemont Street, one of its main roads.

A chief meteorologist at the National Weather Service said Wednesday morning that so far, they have not been requested to assess damage in Delco to determine if a tornado struck the area. It appeared that straight-line winds were to blame for the major damage, but the NWS official said that could potentially change later today as townships and boroughs continue to assess the damage left behind.
