Hundreds of Pennsylvania Taxpayers' Personal Info Could Be in Peril After Thief Swipes Laptop

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue says it's reaching out to more than 800 taxpayers whose personal information was on a laptop that was stolen last month.

Officials say the theft occurred while department auditors were in San Francisco to conduct a routine audit. The department says someone smashed the windows of the auditors' rental vehicle and took four laptops that haven't been recovered.

Officials say the data on one of the laptops may not have been secure.

The department is contacting the 865 affected people to notify them about the theft and offer credit monitoring and other fraud protection services.
