New Jersey's Attorney General's office is disputing claims made by Trenton Mayor Tony Mack, who says he should be allowed to remain in office until he's sentenced on corruption charges.
In legal papers filed Tuesday, the office urged a judge to reject Mack's arguments as flawed and issue an order to immediately oust him.
Mack filed legal papers Monday on his own behalf, arguing that his conviction isn't "guaranteed'' due to outstanding motions in which he seeks a new trial. He was convicted earlier this month of bribery, fraud and extortion.
Under state law, people convicted of corruption cannot continue to hold public office. But since Mack won't step down, the state has been forced to go to court to have him removed.
Court hearings on Mack's request and the state's bid to remove him are scheduled for Wednesday.
