South Jersey Rookie Police Officer Accidentally Shoots Friend, Gets DUI

An Ocean County police officer is under investigation for accidentally shooting his friend in the leg early Friday morning.

Twenty-three-year-old Jesse Urban, a Pine Beach police officer since May 2014, called 911 to report the accidental discharge just before 6 a.m.

Investigators responded to a 7-Eleven parking lot, located at 403 Main Street in Toms River, New Jersey, and found Urban's 23-year-old friend with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Authorities have not yet revealed the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

The victim was rushed to Jersey Shore Hospital, where he is undergoing surgery. Police said his injuries are non-life threatening.

Urban, of Lacey Township, is facing a driving under the influence charge.

Pine Beach Police Chief Reese Fisher suspended the rookie police officer without pay pending the results of the investigation, authorities said.

The 23-year-old cop made headlines last summer when a driver hit him while he was outside of his patrol car during a traffic stop on Route 9 North in Pine Beach.

The motorist, who was coming from a wedding, veered off the road, struck Urban and the two parked patrol cars, NJ.com reported.

Urban broke several ribs and suffered severe cuts to his head and face in the accident.
