Gunfire Erupts at Delaware Sweet 16 Party, Wounds 6

A Delaware girl’s 16th birthday party took a turn for the worst earlier this week when shots were fired and six people were wounded by gunfire.

As the Sweet 16 celebration continued well into the night, a report of a shooting in front of the house on the 100 block of East Street in Harrington came about 1 a.m. Sunday. When police arrived, partygoers began to flee.

The house still bore Sweet 16 decorations from the party days after the shooting, according to DelawareOnline.

Police confirmed a 19-year-old woman and five men ranging from ages 17 to 24 were all shot and sent to nearby hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

The birthday girl’s father described the night as one he wishes he could forget.

Despite interviewing dozens of people, Harrington Detective Sgt. Adam S. Gillespie said, no one was able to provide a clear description of what exactly happen that led to the shooting.

Originally, 30 to 40 people were invited to the party, but as news spread through Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, almost 300 guests showed up, according to reports.

Out of the six people shot, the girl whose birthday it was only knew one of the victims.

No arrests have been made. “We don’t know what caused the shooting to occur, but we have identified people of interests,” said Earl Brode, a Harrington Police lieutenant.

The shooting is still under investigation.
