Sentencing Day for John Perzel

Former State House speaker to be sentenced in Pa. corruption case

Convicted former state House Speaker John Perzel is slated to be sentenced in Pennsylvania's government corruption scandal.

The former Philadelphia lawmaker, his onetime chief of staff and two others who pleaded guilty are scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday in Dauphin County court in Harrisburg.

Prosecutors say the 62-year-old Perzel was the mastermind of an illegal scheme to invest millions of dollars on computer technology and expertise to give Republican candidates an advantage in election campaigns at taxpayers' expense.

Two other GOP defendants stood trial and were convicted of 40 criminal counts each last fall.

Former Rep. Brett Feese of Lycoming County is serving at least four years in state prison and his former aide, Jill Seaman, was sentenced to at least nine months in county jail.
