Fired Professor With Greek Heritage Sues Pennsylvania University for Discrimination

A former University of Scranton professor is suing the school, alleging he was fired because of his Greek heritage.

The (Scranton) Times-Tribune reports Georgios Stylianides wants an order directing the university to reinstate him with back pay and is seeking damages for racial discrimination and retaliation.

The federal lawsuit says he was hired in 2008, but was fired nearly four years later.

According to the lawsuit, Stylianides was told he was fired because he was denied tenure. But he alleges he was terminated because officials held a bias against him based on his ethnicity. He says a co-worker once told him to "go back to Greece" and another introduced him to students as "the short Greek guy."

A university spokesman says the school doesn't comment on pending litigation.
