Officials in Delaware's coastal communities don't have to worry like their counterparts in New Jersey and New York about rebuilding boardwalks damaged by Superstorm Sandy before the next summer tourist season.
The boardwalks in Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach did not sustain any damage from Sandy, nor did the oceanfront boardwalk in Ocean City, Md.
But three smaller, city-owned boardwalks on the bay side of Ocean City sustained about $500,000 in damage. Officials say the city plans to pay for those repairs with funds made available because a previously planned, $6 million project to redo the main oceanfront boardwalk came in under budget.
Meanwhile, the franchise holder responsible for repairing Ocean City's storm-damaged fishing pier has told officials that the pier will be ready by the summer 2013 tourist season.
