A 36-year old man in Montgomery County has the first confirmed case of Salmonella that is linked to the national outbreak.
Pennsylvania officials with the Centers for Disease Control determined the man has one of the same Salmonella strains linked to the outbreak. He is currently recovering at home.
Nationwide, as of January 30th, 529 people in 43 states had been infected with Salmonella Typhimurium.
Most of the illnesses began between September 1, 2008 and January 16, 2009.
According to the CDC, hospitalizations occurred in about 22 percent of the cases. Infection may have contributed to eight deaths. There have been now been15 cases reported in Pennsylvania. This is the first case in Montgomery County. There have been 23 cases reported in New Jersey.
Originally the Salmonella outbreak appeared to be limited to peanut butter shipped in big tubs to institutional customers like nursing homes. But then it was found in peanut paste. Made from ground roasted peanuts, the paste is used as an ingredient in dozens of other products sold directly to consumers.
