The sound and smell of gas was first reported along Route 70 eastbound between Grove Street/Haddonfield Road and Webster Avenue in Cherry Hill around 3:30 a.m.

PSE&G crews arrived and began digging up the ground, Cherry Hill Police said.

All eastbound lanes were closed for hours and once crews began working with heavy equipment a westbound (toward Camden and Philadelphia) lane was also closed.

Police detoured traffic at the Wegman’s shopping center. Haddon Avenue or Route 38 could be used as alternate routes, NBC10 First Alert Traffic reporter Jessica Boyington said.
