Wind & Off-Shore Storms Stir Up Surf Along Jersey Shore

Surf's up along the Jersey shore and swimmers should be cautious heading into Labor Day Weekend.

Forecasters say periods of onshore wind and storms far out to sea are stirring up the ocean. Swells were expected to be about a foot higher Tuesday, meaning swimmers could face breakers in excess of 4 feet. Such waves can knock over swimmers. And, the threat continued into Wednesday as some towns banned body boarding.

"We are encouraging all mariners, personal watercraft users and beachgoers to make safety a priority as these two weather systems pass through the region," said Capt. William Lane, Fifth Coast Guard District chief of response. [[287977901, C]]

Forecasters say while the waves will slowly decrease on Wednesday, there is a moderate risk for dangerous rip currents.

People are advised to swim only when lifeguards are on duty.
