Retired Police Officer Faces Murder Charges in Deadly Bar Shooting

A retired Jersey City police officer accused of shooting a man during a dispute in a city bar on New Year's Day will now face murder charges following the man's death.

Hudson County prosecutors tell The Jersey Journal that 63-year-old city resident James Corley Jr. now faces murder charges in the death of 41-year-old Rodger Pickett, who died Tuesday. Corley's bail was set at $200,000 and a phone number for him could not be located Thursday.

Corley initially was charged with attempted murder and a weapons offense. Authorities have said Pickett was shot three times, but have not disclosed details on the dispute that allegedly spurred the shooting.

Corley retired from the police department in 2004, then served as chief of staff for former Police Department Director Sam Jefferson.
