Officials say repairs to a burst water main in northeast Philadelphia that prompted evacuations and school closures are expected to take a few months.
The Philadelphia Water Department said the break occurred shortly before 9 a.m. Monday on the 48-inch transmission main in the city's Frankford section.
A total of 23 million gallons of water flowed out of the 106-year-old main, which supplies water to a large section of lower northeast Philadelphia and north Philadelphia.
Dozens of schools and day care centers in the affected area were forced to close early due to lack of water pressure.
The main was shut down at 11:30 a.m.
The water department says workers will be at the site for several days to clean the area and prepare the site to repair the main.
