Repaired Statue Returns to Our Lady of Lourdes

The statue is one of the largest religious statues in the country

It's been five months to the day since the statue on top of Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center was removed for repairs. But Tuesday it's being returned to its home on top of the building.

Our Lady of Lourdes statue has been a landmark along the Camden city skyline for 61 years.

The statue, which stands 30 feet high and weighs 15 tons, needed extensive repairs after being damaged during August's 5.8 magnitude earthquake. The top three layers of the statue were cracked and there was significant chipping, according to hospital officials.

The Kreilick Conservation Company at the George Young facility in Swedesboro worked on the structural and cosmetic repairs over the past few months. More than $65K in donations from the local community helped restoration efforts.

The Medical Center has closed down the main entrance to the hospital on Haddon Avenue as a safety precaution on Tuesday, but hospital officials say people can enter through the emergency department entrance on Vesper Boulevard instead.

Our Lady of Lourdes statue is one of the highest points in Camden, and one of the largest religious statues in the country.
