Firefighters Knock Down Blaze at Delaware Recycling Center

Crews had to separate recyclables as they checked to make sure there were no more hot spots left at a recycling center fire early Thursday in Delaware.

A worker at the Gold Medal Environmental plant along the 1000 block of S Heald Street in New Castle called 911 after flames broke out around 3 a.m., said firefighters.

The blaze posed a tough challenge for firefighters.

"The problem with a recycling plant like this is that we have to use heavy equipment inside so we can disperse the recycling materials so we can actually put the fire out... it's very dangerous," said Minquadale Fire Company Chief Joseph Day.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters contained the fire to just one building. They continued to pull apart recyclables after placing the blaze under control in an attempt to make sure the fire wouldn't reignite.

"We're actually just mopping up, hitting hot spots," said Day.

No word yet on a cause.
