PPA Wants to Increase Cost of Residential Parking Permits

A plan from the Philadelphia Parking Authority could impact over 30,000 people in the city.

The PPA wants to charge $35 instead of the current $20 for city drivers to renew their residential parking permits, which allows them to park anywhere along the street in their neighborhood for as long as they want. Currently, around 33,000 Philadelphians have the permits.

The plan also includes an increase for those who have permits for multiple vehicles. Residents would have to pay $50 for permits for two vehicles, $75 for three vehicles and $100 for four vehicles.

“It’s enough as it is,” said Laslo Boyd. “It’s hard enough to find parking anyway so it’s nothing more than a license to hunt.”

If the increase is approved, it could generate around $1.1 million a year for the PPA. City officials insist however that the increase isn’t about the money and claim the revenue generated wouldn’t even be enough to cover the cost of the program.

Another Philly resident, Robert Eldridge, says he supports the increase. According to Eldridge, many people abuse the system and purchase permits for friends who don’t even live in the neighborhood, leading to fewer empty spaces for those who are legally allowed to park in the zones.

“There’s a lot of dishonesty when it comes to some of the parking permits here in the city,” Eldridge said. “You have merchants on South Street who have parking permits. I think instead of $35 or $40 a year they should probably be in the hundreds of dollars a year. You can take that money and improve the streets even just in Center City.”
