The Philadelphia Daily News is disputing claims by the city police union of unethical behavior by the reporters who wrote a Pulitzer Prize-winning series on alleged police misconduct.
Union president John McNesby said Wednesday he had credible evidence that the reporters fabricated information and gave cash and gifts to at least one interview subject. McNesby declined to identify the source of his information.
The new owner of the company that publishes the Daily News and its sister paper, The Philadelphia Inquirer, defended the reporters.
H.F. "Gerry'' Lenfest says there is "no sound evidence that their work was anything but thorough, accurate and ethical.''
The 2009 Daily News series "Tainted Justice'' alleged misconduct among a group of narcotics officers, including looting of bodegas and sexual assault. No charges have been brought.
