Wilmington police will honor an officer killed in the line of duty 122 years ago.
Thirty-seven-year-old Charles Schultz was shot by two men while walking a beat in 1891. A resident took him to Delaware Hospital, where he died. Schultz was married and the father of 5 children.
However, police say Schultz was not officially recognized as a fallen officer. A University of Delaware professor doing research on the department's history uncovered the event.
The Wilmington City Council presented a resolution recognizing Schultz in February.
On Thursday, police will dedicate a headstone to Schultz at Cathedral Cemetery.
