Montco Police Dog Gets Bulletproof Vest

A dog that is trained to defend the safety of his community is getting a safety defense all his own.

K9 “Major” who serves on the  force was given a bulletproof and stab-resistant vest Friday.

The vest, funded by non-profit Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. was sponsored by the Hilltown Dog Training Club that previously awarded vests to Major’s fellow K9s, Cody and Cooper.

K9s, like regular officers are often put into potentially dangerous or violent situations.

Lt. Gerald Dougherty explained that two of the K9s from their department are cross-trained in narcotics and another is cross-trained in explosives in addition to being utilized in missing persons cases, building searches and even criminal apprehensions.

Earlier this month, Ike, a K9 from Vancouver, Washington was stabbed during a struggle with a suspect and later died from his injuries.

Vested Interest has raised more than $1 million through private and corporate donations and provided over 1,500 protective vests in 49 states at $1050 per vest according to their Facebook page.

Major will no longer be left vulnerable.

Lt. Dougherty says his department also has plans to add another K9 to their ranks soon.
