Police: Boy, 10, Said He Didn't Mean to Kill Elderly Woman

Authorities say a 10-year-old boy charged with fatally beating a 90-year-old woman told a Pennsylvania state trooper he was "only trying to hurt her."

But an arrest affidavit says the boy, Tristen Kurilla, also said, "I killed that lady."

A bail hearing was scheduled Wednesday for Kurilla, who is charged as an adult with criminal homicide.

His lawyer wants the 10-year-old, who is a fifth grade student at Damascus Elementary School, released into his father's custody.

The beating occurred Saturday at the home of the Kurilla's grandfather, who had been caring for the woman, Helen Novak.

According to the boy's mother, her son said he lost his temper when he went into the woman's room to ask her a question and she yelled at him.

Kurilla told his mother that "he got mad, lost his temper and grabbed a cane and put it around Novak's throat," according to police.

Police said he also admitted punching her in the throat and stomach.
