Plan Would Have New Operators Help Run 5 Schools In Camden

Officials in Camden are planning to have new operators help run five low-performing schools in the city.

The nonprofit groups chosen to run the schools are either already teaching students in Camden or have plans to open schools in the city, which is among the most impoverished in the U.S.

The groups are Mastery Charter Schools, KIPP Public Charter Schools and Uncommon Schools. The groups also run schools in other cities.

Under the plan, they would bring in new principals who could choose their own teachers for four elementary schools and one middle school in the city. Current teachers would be guaranteed interviews for jobs at the new schools.

Superintendent Paymon Rouhanifard says the plan would also result in major upgrades to the facilities for the converted school.
