Federal investigators say a New Jersey pilot reported engine problems before his small airplane crashed in Virginia earlier this month.
A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board says 52-year-old Gregory A. Voit told an air traffic controller that he was not going to make it to Charlottesville Albemarle Airport.
The six-seat, single-engine Beechraft crashed two minutes later in the front yard of a house about 3 miles east of the airport.
Investigators say the plane struck several trees before coming to a rest about 100 feet from the home around 11 a.m. on Dec. 18.
The plane had left Woodbine Airport in New Jersey and was approaching the Charlottesville airport when it crashed and killed Voit. The Northfield, N.J., resident was the only person aboard the plane.
Media outlets say the NTSB released its preliminary report this week. The investigation is continuing.
Voit was a surgeon at the Shore Medical Center specializing in General Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine and Hand Surgery. He is survived by his wife and four children.
