Apparently Intoxicated Hit-&-Run Driver Strikes Bike Officer, Breaks Leg: Police

Philadelphia Police apprehended a motorist suspected of running over a bike patrol officer.

The officer sustained a broken leg when the Ford Edge jumped a curb and hit him as he and three other officers were investigating an unrelated incident along Custer Street in the Kensington neighborhood late Tuesday night. The other officers jumped to safety.

"After striking the officer and running the officer over, the vehicle left the scene," Philadelphia Police chief Inspector Scott Small said.

Officers caught up to the fleeing suspect a short time later on E Allegheny Avenue. The 44-year-old driver appeared intoxicated and underwent a breathalyzer test, police said. [[238427591, C]]

"Officers also found an open container of alcohol in the front seat of the vehicle," Small said.

The 21-year-veteran officer was treated for a leg fractured in at least two places and listed in stable condition.

The driver was expected to be charged with aggravated assault on police, DUI and related charges, Small said.
