Philly's Tree Giveaway Ends Soon

Registration for city's yearlong neighborhood beautification initiative ends this Sunday

Philadelphia property owners looking to “spruce” up their home or business have one week left to take part in the city’s free tree giveaway program.

Registration for TreePhilly, a yearlong initiative that offers homeowners, businesses, and neighbors free yard trees to plant on their private property, ends this Sunday, March 31. The partnership between Philly’s Parks and Recreation, the Fairmount Park Conservancy, and Wells Fargo aims to make neighborhoods across the city more attractive.

“Our city will be healthier, safer and more attractive as a result of the trees we plant through this program," said Mayor Michael Nutter at the time of the announcement last month. "This year, Philadelphians can ask for more than one tree and we have more locations for pick-up," he said.

The program, now in its second year, allows residential property owners this time around to request up to two trees and community groups and faith-based institutions can register for up to ten trees, according to organizers.

The spring tree list includes: Sweetbay Magnolia, Serviceberry, Pawpaw, American Plum, American Hornbeam, Flowering Dogwood, Eastern Redbud, Boxelder, Black Gum, and Tulip Tree.

TreePhilly is offering a total of nine pick-up locations on seven different days in April. Participants who register by Sunday can select their pick-up site and date. They will also receive a tree planting and care demonstrations.
