Phillies CEO David Montgomery Takes Medical Leave of Absence

The Philadelphia Phillies said Thursday that President and CEO David Montgomery is taking a medical leave of absence from the organization while he continues to recover from jaw cancer surgery last spring.

Montgomery, 68, had surgery to remove cancer from his right jaw bone on May 19 and was hospitalized for about a week at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

During Montgomery’s absence, his responsibilities will be filled by Pat Gillick, who was general manager when the Phillies won the 2008 World Series and currently serves as senior adviser to General Manager Ruben Amaro. Read more about Montgomery's recovery at
