4 Shot, 2 Dead After Violent Night

Four people were shot, two killed -- including a man walking to work -- in three separate shootings in three separate sections of the city overnight.

The deadly night began around 10:50 p.m. when two men were shot inside a house near 44th and Market Streets in West Philadelphia. An unidentified man in his 20s was hit twice and pronounced dead at the scene while a second person was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the arm.

Philadelphia Police Lt. John Walker said that two different types of shell casings were found at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and no motive was given for the shooting.

“We’re just not quite sure what transpired inside the house,” Walker said.

A couple hours later a man was shot and robbed when he stepped outside to smoke a cigarette along the 5900 block of Tabor Avenue in the Lawncrest section of the city.

When police officers arrived they found a 25-year-old man with five gunshot wounds to his side. He was taken to Einstein Hospital in stable condition.

“According to our victim the motive of the shooting was robbery,” said police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The victim told police that he gave up his cell phone but had no money on him. That was when one of the suspects opened fire.

Just after sunset the deadly night ended with another shooting along the 2800 block of N. Lawrence Street in North Philadelphia.

According to police, a 46-year-old man was shot multiple times in the face, head and body along the 2800 block of N Lawrence Street.

The man was pronounced dead on the sidewalk just before 5 a.m., according to Small.

“We know that at least eight shots were fired at close range from a semi-automatic handgun,” Small said.

Small said that a preliminary investigation showed that the victim was walking to his job at a construction site when he was shot.

Officers were working to find out a motive for this shooting.
